The patents cover different goods and services related to fandom, social media, virtual environments, digital arts, crypto-collectibles, NFTs, application tokens, and digital currencies! Let’s take a deep dive into each of these trademarks below and what we can expect from 9GAG!
9Gag: What Does the Internet Giant Plan to Do in Web3?
Earlier this week, trademark & copyright attorney @NeerMcD (NeerMcD.eth) took to Twitter to unveil 9Gag’s plans for the immediate future. In a gist, she explains that 9GAG has filed patents for multiple use cases surrounding NFTs. The first of which is the word “PFP” itself! This word is used across the NFTverse to refer to “Profile Picture” projects, including many avatar-based projects. It is the most common type of NFT collection/drop to date.
Other patents include downloadable software that allows for the creation and distribution of digital tokens. Furthermore, these digital tokens are used as “fan tokens.” These “fan tokens” will allow holders to prove loyalty to a particular fandom or community. The software can be customized, and users can select distribution methods.
More patents include the administration of a customer loyalty program that rewards users with digital assets, digital tokens, utility tokens, NFTs, digital collectibles, crypto-collectibles, cryptocurrencies, digital currencies, and virtual currencies. It also offers online retail store services featuring virtual goods, digital content, and NFTs. Although no mention of any ‘phygital’ trademarks are hinted at yet from the brand. The company’s trademark includes the provision of an online marketplace for buyers and sellers of goods and services. This also includes digital goods authenticated by NFTs. Could this lead to a “9GAG Wallet”?

Under IC 036, 9GAG patents issuance of tokens of value, virtual currency dealing trading services, and financial transaction services involving cryptocurrency, NFTs, and blockchain technology. These services offer secure commercial transactions and payment options for digital assets. 9GAG also patents an online non-downloadable computer software platform.
This platform is also for creating and distributing digital tokens to prove loyalty to a particular fandom or community mentioned above. It also offers a platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS). These services allow software access to digital marketplaces, virtual environments, and auctions.
9GAG is at the forefront of meme culture. It continues to be, for many, a voice of internet culture and meme media since decades. To see the brand’s pivot into web3 and NFTs is surely a refreshing take. As PUNK 6529 states “we must seize the memes of production.” And who better to do it, than 9GAG!?
