Adidas is making its step into the metaverse and creating NFTs, as announced on their Twitter earlier this week. This comes during the same week that their major competitor, Nike also announced their endeavour into the space. It was done through POAP, a platform for distributing crypto-badges tied to specific events.
Adidas is a company that now needs no introduction. But, Adidas is a German fashion company that has now gone global and is known as one of the biggest brands in the industry. The company was founded in 1949, a few years after WWII by Adolf Dassler. The story of the company’s beginning is interesting, with the Dassler brothers having a fallout then a split, and both brothers going their different ways, with Rudolf creating Puma, who on their own is one of the biggest fashion companies.
Adidas is the second-largest sportswear manufacturer in the world, behind only Nike. The Adidas group also own Reebok, as well as 8.33% of the German football team, Bayern Munich. Adidas has been involved in the majority of sports, most prominently: (association) football, running, tennis, basketball and cricket. They have sponsorship deals with many athletes and teams around the world.
About Adidas NFTs
Many of the details on the Adidas NFTs are unclear. It seems that all of the first NFTs they sold have been sold out or somehow no longer available through POAP, but you can see the page here. The company said on their Confirmed app: “This digital collectible is our way of rewarding you for following your curiosity… this token proves you were here from the beginning of this journey. Keep it safe — it may come in handy.” So far, this seems like a ticket of form to access something of a future event or ticket. We may see a similar move to what Nike have done, with their move into the Metaverse with Roblox.
About the Future of Fashion in the Metaverse
Fashion NFTs have been spoken about a lot recently. Many people feel that there is a large amount of potential with this niche of NFTs. Nike has also stepped into the metaverse, with their partnership with Roblox in creating NikeLand. Which is free-to-play on the platform. There has also been fashion involvement in Decentraland, as well as FEWOCiOUS, who created physical shoes, with his artwork on it. He has also confirmed that his future projects will heavily involve fashion.
