Alex Grey is a visionary artist who is famous for his psychedelic paintings. The artist dropped his first art NFTs on Nifty Gateway. It’s safe to say that they’re highly unique NFTs, as they represent alternative mind states.
About the NFT Collection
Grey created these NFTs in collaboration with his partner Allyson Grey. The four NFTs – Faces of Entheon, Kissing, Monochord and Sol Invictus – were initially minted at $1. They are now sold out and are highly coveted on the secondary market.
The Faces of Entheon NFT shows the twenty-one-foot high sculptural countenance planned for Entheon. There is a band of secret writing, by Allyson Grey, which wraps the upper temple. This signifies the creative spirit.
Kissing is an animated representation of love. The golden flame symbolises consciousness and spirit. Additionally, the hearts and minds of the couple are surrounded by two golden flame infinity bands. This depicts that the bond of love is eternal.
Monochord represents the bridge of the lower and higher realms; with the monochord being a single strand strung from heaven to earth. Furthermore, the hero in the image is looking up, embodying the feeling of alignment.
Finally, Sol Invictus symbolizes mystic identity. According to the artist, “The four faces and vertical eyes of this luminous being point to the People of the Four Directions, coming together in Visionary Oneness.”
Who is Alex Grey?
Alex Grey is an American visual artist popular for his spiritual and psychedelic paintings. Grey’s artwork includes performance art; installation art; visionary art; painting; performance art; sculpture as well as painting.
In addition to being partners, Alex and Allyson Grey are also collaborators. An example of their work is the interactive installation artwork Mending the Heart Net, exhibited at Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum in 1998-1999.
In 1999, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego recognised Grey’s work by presenting a career retrospective entitled Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey. As a result of this exhibition, prog-rock band Tool commissioned Grey to create their album artwork.
In addition to Tool, Nirvana, the Beastie Boys, Meshuggah, The String Cheese Incident and the Discovery Channel have all used Alex Grey’s artwork. Moreover, global galleries have recognised his talent and also exhibited his work.
Alex Grey is undoubtedly one of the pioneers in the psychedelic art scene. In fact, author Patrick Lundborg calls Grey “the leading psychedelic artist of today, and also one of the foremost proponents of Visionary Art as a style.”
Alex Grey is one of the many experimental artists who is experimenting with the NFT space. Artists such as the Richard Bernstein Estate, Julie Pacino and Tristan Eaton have all dropped NFTs, further bridging the gap between traditional art and Web3.
