Welcome to “An NFT Evening With…” our weekly feature shining a spotlight on some of the community’s most talented NFT artists. This week we speak with French artist Sonsac Sonsaque AKA PIGsDESTRXYER. Sonsaque’s work is a psychedelic mesh of color and juxtapositions of figures and objects screaming straight out of the world of tattoos and pop culture. Yet the strong undercurrent of the #metoo movement and powerful liberating images come front and center in the work as each scene sinks in.
NFT Evening: What’s your background? How did you get into doing art? In other words, were you doing much commercial art before you entered the NFT space?
PIGsDESTRXYER: As far as I can remember, I’ve always drawn. I started by copying dinosaurs from a book. It became my full-time job about five years ago with tattoo. Every day that artform gives me stories, subjects and material to be creative.
NFTE: First of all, tell us how you discovered NFTs. Moreover, what made you want to publish your art as NFTs?
PDR: I was looking for new ways to spread my tattoo art, suggest designs for it, trying to beat the endemic copycats in this job. I was confined in France, my shop was closed so I needed to find a way to remain productive. Then, I discovered Skillett’s work (he’s French too), Punk’s work and the boom of pixel art in the NFT-verse, so I was like, “Let’s learn how to create something in this style.” This is how my first NFT project Moniii was born, which had nothing to do with tattoo eventually.
NFTE: What do you think about the differences or similarities between NFT digital art and traditional mediums? Do you prefer one over the other?
PDR: Well, I think as long as somebody creates something, no matter what the medium is, it is art. In a certain way, a production which relies on the exposition format, wins something, gets bigger. I need to create a bridge between drawing and painting, and I try to elevate my art with numerical tools. I enjoy learning and experimenting with new techniques.
NFTE: How did the whole PigsDESTRXYER thing come about? How did you choose that name? Most importantly, what inspired or influenced the project?
PDR: – After some time in the NFT world, I felt the need to produce a form of art that is closer to my drawing habits. My portfolio was filled with sketches and painted portraits. Yet, I created the first chapter of DIGITAL DEITY, with MOTHERs, a mixture of inked women faces, photographs I took on the streets, and glitchy effects.
I released 10 items and then produced chapter two, PIGsDESTRXYER. The storyline idea is a blend of conversations with my wife, my coworkers in tattoo who are all women, and my customers, highlighting my rage as a man towards men’s abuses against women. Lots of sad stories emerged but also plenty of stories about proud, strong women who fight back against these men. This subject also means a lot to me as a father of two girls.
In France #metoo inspired #balancetonporc, which you can translate literally as “snitch your pig.” I was also in a grindcore/chaotic hardcore vibe, so I took the band name “PIG DESTROYER” as an inspiration, also in order to keep a French touch in my project.
NFTE: Your images are so stunning, and the colors really pop in such amazing layers of contrast. For example, the tri-tones in the PIGsDESTRXYER Army pieces are fabulous. Was this always the sort of palette you worked with or is this something new for you?
PDR: I would usually rather work with black mediums and derivatives, since it relates to the story being told and the realm of the dream. However, every project is a chance to break habits. Aggressive colors and nudity strengthen the subjects’ fury in the PIGsDESTRXYER series.
NFTE: We could never pick a favorite from your work, but could you ever choose an image among the NFTs you’ve released so far that you like best? And if so, why?
PDR: That’s a difficult question, as I’m trying to do better for each new work. Nevertheless, my preference would go to the ones with televisions, for which I used painting, drawings and animation stuff. I have probably not created my favorite yet anyway!
NFTE: Do you have any favorite NFT artists you follow or projects that inspire you?
PDR: It’s hard to pick one specific artist in the NFT-verse, and for one specific reason, but I can make a list of humans I have met!
For being real good humans, being amazing artists and having a good influence on the NFT world: my French buddy Skillett, Neon Kabuki, Rakshas X, and S.H.A.C.K.E.R.S. Then there are the strong supporters like Kush Cabin, NFT update, Sticky keys, Amanda Deivik, and Hammy Hamster.
NFTE: Do you draw any inspiration from other the NFT artists? Moreover, how does what you see in the NFT space compare with traditional visual artists?
PDR: Other artists inspire me with their ways to communicate, to think of NFTs as a separate artistic medium, to create a humanist community every day. However, in order to remain as original as possible, I try to stay away from my colleagues’ graphic universes.
NFTE: I understand you’re coming to the end of your first series. So, what’s next for you in NFTs?
PDR: Just after PIGsDESTRXYERs, I will release a short series of 11 works directly related, who are the greatest real WARRIOR SPIRITs sent to women by MOTHERs. They will be available for owners (pgdstyr and pgdstyr army) and one giveaway. Then will come chapter 3, the series GODS DEATH which is about childhood.
NFTE: What do you think the future holds for NFTs and likewise what do you think that future holds for you? In other words, where would you like to go with NFTs?
PDR: I see new stuff every day in the NFT-verse, always more original creations, and I think this is just the beginning. The more traditional artists are interested in it, the more this art will grow. Personally, I will work more and more on it, discover things to grow my art, propose things the world has never seen! And I’ll probably link NFT production with my tattoo art…
