A piece of Banksy inspired art titled Warning sign NFT is going up for auction. The digital artwork will raise money for the Fire Department of New York Foundation. The auction is live now on OpenSea and will run till December 12th.
Media company Gloss are behind the project. Gloss aims to bring the physical art world into the digital universe. As well as owning the original piece of Banksy art, they are now looking at ways to enter the NFT market.
The famously anonymous artist altered a British traffic sign to create two vertical lines in the Banksy artwork. By changing the ‘roads diverging’ sign, he made a unique piece of art reminiscent of the Twin Towers in New York. The triangle sign with a red frame and black lines creates a genuinely vivid image.
Warning sign NFT will raise money for 9/11 charity.
Banksy added a stencil of a plane to the left of the sign, illustrating the aircraft used in the terror attack on 9/11. The attack officially killed 2996 people, but many people died and suffered indirectly. Additionally, it ruined many families and changed the world as we know it today.
Inspired by the Bansky 2006 artwork, the piece has a unique twist. As well as recreating the original artwork, the Warning Sign NFT rotates 360-degrees. As it turns, the plane in the artwork disappears, and a flock of doves fly upwards towards the sky. It is an ethereal image and of great symbolic importance.
Furthermore, Gloss said that “each dove has its own unique flight pattern as it leaves the building, representing the uniqueness and individuality of each of the lives lost”.
Gloss also added that the Warning Sign NFT shows that “ultimately the terrorists were unsuccessful in this mission”. They might have been successful in that individual attack, but as a consequence, it united the people of New York, America and the wider world.
The winner of the auction will also get a 5% equity stake in the original Banksy artwork.
Fire Department of New York Foundation
Some of the proceeds will go towards charity. The FDNY Foundation is the official non-profit organization of the New York City Fire Department. As well as assisting the men and women of the FDNY directly, FDNY also works to protect New York through several initiatives. It also supports the families of firefighters who died on 9/11.
In total, 415 emergency workers died on 9/11, and 343 were firefighters. These brave men and women rushed into the Twin Towers without any hesitation and saved countless lives in the process. They paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect people, and the Warning Sign NFT will help provide some financial support to their families.
Banksy Involvment in NFTs
Finally, Banksy is now heavily involved in the digital space. Last week, in collaboration with Sotheby’s, he sold two pieces in the metaverse space, Decentraland.
