After a successful inaugural launch last year, virtual-reality platform Decentraland is all set to launch the second edition of its annual Art Week. Art Week 2021 will kick off on the metaverse on July 8, Decentraland said in a blog post.
The event will feature exhibitions from top NFT Platforms, openings by acclaimed artists, and feature real-world galleries on the metaverse. Film clubs, group shows from art collectives, theatre performances, and after-parties will also be a part of the ten-day-long cultural festival.
Lobster Land by Philip Colbert
“I love the democratic spirit of Decentraland – that anyone can engage and create an artistic voice,” British artist and designer Philip Colbert said in a separate blog post. “If art is an expression of human freedom, then it seems very possible that the world’s most profound and cutting edge art would all be in the metaverse.”
Colbert’s ‘Lobster Land’ is one of the main highlights of Art Week 2021. The artist will launch his new digital works in ‘Lobsteropolis city’—an ode to lobsters, in Decentraland. Made up of a total of 57 plots, Lobsteropolis is located within the Vegas City district in the metaverse.
The artist has collaborated with American legendary pop group Devo to launch a series of NFTs. Along with this, Devo will also perform a DJ set during the launch. Visitors can enjoy a casino, Lobster Mart supermarket, and the Lobster Lounge – a live concert venue, in Colbert’s city.
Other highlights of Art Week 2021
In another highlight of the Art Week, online marketplace Portion will launch a museum in Decentraland’s Voltaire District alongside auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s. The grand opening will feature NFTs by artists like Kevin Abosch, Ryan Koopmans, Osinachi, and Sephora Venites, among others.
Meanwhile, ‘The Miami Beach Art Collection’ by Playboy and SuperRare is another key event during the festival. In celebration of Playboy and SuperRare’s first partnership, the duo will host a Miami Beach-themed launch party in Decentraland’s Crypto Valley Gallery.
On July 9, the brand will exclusively launch NFTs by artists such as Ayla El-Moussa, REK0DE, Jon Noorlander, and MBSJQ on SuperRare. In addition, Playboy will also mint a brand new NFT featuring the original photograph of Playboy Bunny Kathie.
Meanwhile, the Museum of Crypto Art will open an exhibition titled ‘Sculpture Garden’ on day 9. It will feature “a unique collection of 3D objects in a surrealist context”. The highlight of the exhibition will be ‘Hack of a Bear’, a Leonardo Da Vinci-inspired sculpture by art duo Hackatao. It will also feature the works of Frenetik Void, Animattic, Vansdesign, Artboffin, and more.
Decentraland’s announcement of Art Week 2021 comes on the heels of its recent most expensive NFT land sale. The ten-day-long cultural festival promises to be an exciting amalgamation of exhibitions, launch parties, music, events, and more.
