Sustainability is now an NFT industry standard. Luke Colvin takes it a step further by creating NFT-backed environmentally-friendly Surfboards. The UCT honor’s graduate teamed up with M2Bio, a marijuana and magic mushrooms medical research company to create this unique NFT offering.

Surfboards NFT
Colvin completed his honor’s degree in mechanical engineering at UCT in 2017. His work focused on sustainable surfboard core substitutes as alternatives to polyurethane and polystyrene. So he needed to make a biodegradable surfboard as part of his research but he couldn’t due to lack of funding.
This is where nutraceutical biotechnology company M2Bio Sciences comes into the picture. The Cape Town-based company invested in Colvin’s idea. Together, they created a collection of 10 biodegradable surfboards made out of mycelium (threadlike fungi) and hemp. Additionally, the surfboards are headed to the auction block in August through OpenSea.
The M2 in the company’s name M2Bio stands for marijuana and mushrooms. Basically, they research alternative plant-based cannabinoids which can be used to treat patients. Their work benefits those with alcohol addiction, mental illness and cardiovascular diseases. Head of visual communication and design at M2Bio Sciences, Johann McLoughlin, made sure that the look, feel and design of the surfboards reflect the kind of work that they do. He said, “ “We wanted to be true to our brand and work within the psychedelic space whilst making it appealing for a larger audience too.”
He adds, “The designs draw inspiration from various pop art styles, vintage halftone prints, mandala patterns inspired by the far east, and 60’s tie-dye.”
The NFT Space Going Green
Ever since Elon Musk expressed concerns over the “rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining,” going green became a top priority for blockchain projects. Moreover, existing projects started to pivot towards doing business in a sustainable way.
Metaverse gaming giant The Sandbox moved to Polygon to lessen the game’s carbon footprint and improve customer experience. NFT Marketplace INFINITE is also putting the environment first by being carbon-negative not just carbon-neutral.
