The company bought the parcel 33,147 in the metaverse, signalling a fresh user experience. Besides, Carrefour e-commerce chief Elodie Perthuisot has said that “concrete projects will follow soon”.

“We have acquired an area equivalent to 30 supermarkets in the metaverse. Stay tuned for future experiments and innovations,” the company reportedly said

Carrefour’s metaverse move: More projects soon

Carrefour is yet to announce more details about its metaverse move. So far, the company has only announced the plot details. However, Perthuisot, in a LinkedIn post, said that more projects will soon happen.

“This is our first move in the metaverse on The Sandbox,” she wrote. “A virtual field and above all a field of innovation for Carrefour, in line with our digital transformation strategy.”

She further added, “The field will be at the heart of our metaverse activities, as we experiment, to understand the evolutions of retail and consumption that will come. Concrete projects will follow soon.”

Major brands and the metaverse

Carrefour is not the first or only retail brand to hop on the metaverse bandwagon. In fact, last month, retail giant Walmart filed multiple trademarks, indicating a metaverse move. Based on the filings, it is planning to sell virtual goods, including toys, apparel, electronics, and sporting equipment, among others.

Similarly, several major brands have forayed into the metaverse. Nike, for example, filed multiple trademark applications late last year. It has also partnered with Roblox to develop a digital world called ‘Nikeland’. It has also acquired the digital sneaker company RTFKT. Adidas, on the other hand, partnered with Coinbase to buy a virtual plot in The Sandbox.

All in all, major brands entering the space spells big things for the industry as a whole.
