Kraken NFT collection teased by the exchange despite the current backlash

By Janelle BorgDecember 14, 20213 Mins Read

Seattle’s hockey team – Seattle Kraken – have just announced a set of exclusive Kraken NFTs. However, some fans are not so happy about this. Here’s why.

    Seattle Kraken’s NFTs

Seattle Kraken is launching a limited NFT drop on December 20th in collaboration with Orange Comet. This collection will include 7 unique designs that capture the essence of the Kraken brand. Each drop will also include a mystery Kraken NFT that the NFT owner can only view post-purchase.

The NFT drop also includes an evolving NFT – available to 32 fans only – that will reveal the team’s official mascot. In addition to this, there’s a Kraken pack – the “Captian Box” – which is an animated NFT that contains a set of three NFTs.

For as little as $50, Kraken NFT owners will also be able to access extras such as autographed Kraken Jerseys, 2021-22 season tickets and the opportunity to watch pre-game warm-ups from the penalty box. Fans need to register on the Orange Comet site directly for the drop.

How is Seattle Kraken dealing with the climate controversy?

Seattle Kraken has publicly committed to being an eco-friendly team. Therefore, some fans are confused since the large majority of NFTs are not environmentally friendly. NFTs require “mining” to create the item; mining requires tremendous computing power.

To counteract this backlash, this eco-friendly hockey team is using Orange Comet to host its NFT exchange. This is because Orange Comet NFTs are minted on the eco-friendly Avalanche Blockchain. At the same time, Orange Comet also specialises in sports, music, art, and entertainment. Therefore, this partnership will reinforce Orange Comet’s and Seattle Kraken’s carbon-neutral pledge. It will also help Seattle Kraken maintain its image as a climate-friendly yet still innovative sports team.

Todd Humphrey, SVP of Digital and Fan Experience for the Seattle Kraken, explains further: “Being able to call a tech-forward city like Seattle home makes partnering with Orange Comet for this Kraken NFT drop an easy choice. We are so excited to see these one-of-a-kind items come to life as another way fans can be a part of this historic inaugural season.”

Seattle Kraken is not the first sports team to launch an NFT collection. Chicago Blackhawks, New Jersey Devils and Golden State Warriors are but some of the teams that have launched successful NFT collections over the last couple of months.
