Lionel Messi has announced an NFT drop on Ethernity Chain. This is the first time the footballing hero has explored the non-fungible space, and the sale starts on 20th August.

The collection celebrates the career of the legendary Argentine player, produced in collaboration with digital artist Bosslogic. Among other things, the latter previously worked on a drop linked to the Marvel Avengers franchise.
What’s in the Lionel Messi Ethernity Chain NFT Drop?
As stated above, the set of tokens commemorates Messi’s incredible story as a pro footballer. In total there are three individual NFTs ready to go live. Let’s let Bosslogic take it from here.
“The collection is a set of pieces outlining achievements, moments, team love, and future accomplishments focusing mainly on the man himself,” the artist said in a statement. The trio of non-fungible tokens includes an image of Messi in an Iron-Man style bionic suit. Entitled ‘Man From the Future’, it gives a strong nod to the aforementioned Marvel universe.
As for the second, ‘Worth the Weight’ pictures Messi in a form that resembles Atlas, the Greek god who carried the world on his shoulders. Finally, ‘The King Piece’ shows the South American great surrounded by chess pieces. Among the Rooks, Knights, and Queens, Messi is King, as the name suggests.

It’s important to realise the drop involves a fourth NFT. But as much as we would love to tell you all about it details are thin on the ground. All we know is it will be unveiled later this month and involves Impossible Brief, a creative agency. It’s not clear what form the token will take.
Who is Lionel Messi?
If you’re unsure who Lionel Messi is then let’s put it like this — he’s one of the most revered football players of all time, and often regarded as the greatest in the world right now. Hence a record-setting six Ballon d’Or Dream Team awards, 34 trophies for his current long-standing club team Barcelona FC, and the Argentina captain’s armband he has worn since 2011.
The Rise and Rise of Sports NFTs
Suffice to say, this isn’t the first sports NFT collection dedicated to an individual. And it certainly won’t be the last. Yesterday we reported on six NHL Hall-of-Famers who were releasing career highlights in non-fungible for. The drop goes live today, 5th August, on the FTX platform.
Meanwhile, another footballing ace, Ronaldinho, announced his own NFT collection last month. And Sotheby’s, the world-famous auction house and one of the most prominent in the crypto art space, marked the Tokyo Olympic Games with a drop dedicated to boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
Players and specific athletes aside, teams have also been getting in on the action. Sticking with the Olympics, Team Great Britain unveiled the first-ever olympiad NFT collection this summer, with help from NFT commerce provider Tkns and fashion designer Ben Sherman. We’ve also seen activity from NBA guns Cleveland Cavaliers, not to mention dominant European football teams like Manchester City and Juventus.
