Marvel fans have a new reason to rejoice. Marvel Entertainment has partnered with digital collectibles platform VeVe to launch its first official NFTs, the company said in a press release on Thursday, June 24.
“Since the beginning, collecting has always gone hand in hand with being a Marvel fan,” Marvel Entertainment’s President Dan Buckley said. “Like us, VeVe understands collecting is about the experience just as much as the product, and we look forward to extending that experience for our fans over the years to come.”
More on Marvel NFT Collectibles
Marvel is not only launching NFT digital collectibles but 3D statues and digital comic books as well. Fans can view the 3D models on their smart devices in virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR). While the company said that the collections will be launched in the coming months, it is yet to share images of the collection.
Users will be able to interact with the collectibles on the VeVe Digital Collectibles App. The app is available on both iOS and Android. In the app, fans can buy and collect a wide range of Marvel NFTs. In addition, they can trade and hunt for rare, as well as, “secret-rare” NFT comic books and collectibles. Moreover, users can also display their collections on the “fully customizable virtual showrooms.”
“Through VeVe’s platform, we hope to expand the limits of what Marvel fandom can be, starting with personal and interactive digital collectibles that, through NFTs, fans can truly collect, share, and enjoy in a way that they have not been able to do before,” said Daniel Fink. Frink is the Vice President of Business Development and Strategy at Marvel Entertainment.
On VeVe, users can purchase Gems—its in-app currency—using their credit card. Once purchased, they can use Gems to buy Marvel NFTs or sell them to others via VeVe’s secondary marketplace.
VeVe co-Founder and CEO David Yu said, “The VeVe Digital Collectibles App takes that idea of collecting to the next level by embodying that element of fun while also making the growing trend of NFT digital collectibles accessible for everyone.”
To date, VeVe claims to have sold more than 580,000 NFT digital collectibles. It also claims to have a user base of over 340,000.
Comic book giants entering the NFT market
Marvel is not the only coming book giant to hop on the NFT bandwagon. DC Comics, Marvel’s main comic industry rival, has been selling its digital 3D model collectibles on VeVe since last year. In addition, last week, an NFT Marvel Marketplace went live on Binance Smart Chain.
However, as we reported earlier, there has been a rift between comic book giants and the artists who worked on the comics. After some comic book artists released their NFTs, both Marvel and DC had issued statements against the sale of digital images with their intellectual property.
With Marvel now officially announcing its NFTs, fans will be able to collect NFTs of their favourite characters hassle-free. However, what this means to the NFTs independently launched by the comic artists, remains to be seen.
