Metacask, an NFT marketplace for whisky cask NFTs, is all set to auction an extremely rare 1991 Macallan whisky linked to an NFT. For this, the platform has partnered with renowned artist Trevor Jones. Jones’ 1/1 whisky-themed digital painting will accompany the whisky cask.
The 30-year-old Macallan cask is worth over $2 million. Metacask expects the upcoming auction to break the record for the most expensive whisky cask sold in an auction. Currently, another 1991 Macallan, which fetched $573,000 last month, holds that record.
All about Metacask’s Macallan Whisky NFT auction
Called ‘The Angel’s share NFT’, the NFT represents ownership of the real-world 1991 Macallan Whisky cask. The cask is currently stored at Macallan’s distillery in Scotland. The auction winner will also get an audio-visual artwork by Jones depicting the country’s rich whisky heritage.
“As an artist, the opportunity to create an original piece for such a unique concept, linked to a name as prestigious as Macallan, was very exciting,” Jones said in a press release. “NFTs are the future of digital ownership, but Metacask is taking this technological innovation to the next stage with regards to physical assets and investment.”
Jones is a pioneer of augmented reality artworks and has released several NFTs in recent months. Recently, along with artists Don Diablo and Alotta Money, he dropped the Ethereal NFT collection to celebrate the Ethereum network’s sixth anniversary.
The Angel’s Share NFT will go live on Metacask’s marketplace on October 18 and will run till October 22. With this auction, Metacask will officially launch its marketplace. Starting November, it will begin auctioning more whisky cask NFTs.
