Music NFTs are getting personal this month as a leading Hollywood musician lends fans an ear. Tom Holkenborg has confirmed plans for a ‘Soundtrack of Your Life’ NFT, linked to the ‘audio journey’ of someone’s life.
It’s a relatively simple idea, and one that starts at 12PM tomorrow EST, Wednesday 16th June 2021. The famed muso, also known as Junkie XL, will launch a one-off auction on non-fungible platform AmplifyX, giving someone the rights to buy both the token and associated “life soundtrack”, which he will compose. The transaction will use the Tezos blockchain, which is far more energy efficient than many alternatives.
When the sale ends, the winner can dive into the project themselves, or make a gift of their victory. Whoever’s life forms the soundtrack will be interviewed by Holkenborg, so they can share their highs, lows, hopes and dreams. The composer will then realise those experiences as a 20+minute movie-style score. It’s the first time NFTs for music have been sold in such a personal way.
“This is my first real exploration of the blockchain. I am definitely curious to experiment more, drawn to its transparency and decentralized approach. Beneath the hype it still feels quite punk rock and DIY, and I believe that major possibilities exist within the Blockchain to help empower creators. It’s always good to think about expanding the limits of how and where music can go, and to collaborate with artists in other mediums,” said Holkenborg, according to a report by Coinspeaker.
Tom Who’s NFTs for Music?
Even if you don’t realise it, there’s a very good chance you’ve heard Holkenborg’s music once or twice already. The artist has worked on some enormous movies in his time, bestowing equally huge scores on each of them. Directors like Peter ‘Lord of the Rings’ Jackson, Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron have all used his services in the past. His name appears on credits for films including ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Justice League’, ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Godzilla vs Kong’.
Holkenborg’s NFT auction isn’t limited to the ‘Soundtrack of Your Life’ token, either. In total there will be 15 items in the drop, including the composer’s first non-film work since 2012: the single ‘Despite All That Was’. Three original pieces of artwork will also feature, made in collaboration with Space Renders, the visual artist also known as Juan Piana.
In other news around NFTs for music, BAND Royalty is now allowing fans to earn money from artists’ recorded work. Meanwhile, legendary rapper Fatman Scoop and producer BLVD have launched an NFT-backed record label.
