OpenSea recently tweeted about “giving back” in the NFT space. However, the tweet didn’t sit well with crypto Twitter. In fact, the largest NFT marketplace has received a ton of sarcasm just for posting that tweet. In case you haven’t seen the tweet, here it is:
Crypto Twitter can’t stop mocking OpenSea following its “giving back” tweet
As the world’s largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea has its own series of slip-ups. These include takedowns of NFT projects, bugs and scams causing owners to lose their prized NFTs, and so on. Without a doubt, these events have led to much frustration and disappointment in the NFT community.
Twitter user @OGDfarmer first posted a snapshot of the OpenSea’s “give back” tweet, to which he replied: “I’ll take tone deaf for 13 billion Alex”. For those unaware, this is a joke inspired by the game show “Jeopardy!” and its legendary host, Alex Trebek.
The mockeries didn’t stop there though. Another Twitter user @Lil_Paki007 replied: “In the history of things that never happened, this never happened the most.” Pretty much jeering at OpenSea’s lack of giving back after all.
Next, from @Bornosor: “Bold of them to mention giving back while they’re actively deplatforming and straight up deleting artists accounts from their website just based on nationality.”
And check this out from @CyphrETH: “By “giving back” do they mean unwillingly through being scammed & aping into rugs?”
Well, the list goes on. Nevertheless, we noticed that many of the salty comments are coming from LooksRare’s supporters. One of the Twitter users @broah_eth commented: “Well, OpenSea, let me tell you about how many people I’m helping by using LooksRare…” This seemingly refers to lower transaction fees on LooksRare.
Indeed, the OpenSea competitor has been looking for opportunities to close the gap between itself and OpenSea. Back in February, LooksRare introduced a transfer function that will warn owners if they’re about to transfer an NFT with a sale listing. This helped address OpenSea’s listing problem at that time.
Nevertheless, OpenSea remains the biggest NFT marketplace for now. Only time will tell whether LooksRare or other NFT marketplaces can topple OpenSea in the long run.
