Famous rapper, Post Malone, bought two Bored Ape NFTs for over $700K very recently. The star’s NFT journey with the Bored Ape Yacht Club started lavishly. Taking it to whole another level, he displayed a MoonPay advert, on his music video. For those that don’t know, Moonpay is a crypto exchange service who now have their own NFT marketplace.
Essentially, the “One Right Now” music video with The Weeknd shows Post Malone using an NFT Marketplace to buy a Bored Ape. The NFT marketplace he is supporting: MoonPay.
Apparently, a corresponding TikTok video from Moonpay shows the rapper purchasing live. In total, he spent 160 ETH(~ $735k at the time of writing) on two prominent Bored Apes ( #961 and #9039).
MoonPay and Post Malone Controversy
Actually, BAYC is one of the most popular NFTs in the entire NFT market. Currently, the 10k generative collection has a floor price of 52.4 ETH. Increasingly, they are becoming the most sought-after collectibles.
Despite their already great status, the Bored Ape Yacht Club is likely heart-warmed as Post Malone joins a long-list of BAYC endorsing celebrities. However, not everyone is celebrating. Mainly due to the fact there’s proof that Moonpay paid Post Malone 175 ETH for the sponsorship.
Basically, the rapper didn’t actually buy it with his own money. Likely, Moonpay paid for Post Malone’s NFT themselves. To illustrate, this is the wallet currently owning the two NFTs. If you check it in etherscan, you’ll see transactions from Moonpay to Post.
Reportedly, a total of 175 ETH was transferred in two transactions from Moonpay on 2021-10-29 at 8:54 and another one two days later on 2021-10-31 at 10:24.
Now, Post Malone’s NFT collection includes Crypto Tards, Chromie Squiggle, Divine Anarchy, and a lot of others. In total, he has 57 NFTs so far. Whether you are content with how he got it (or not), Post Malone is clearly knees-deep in the NFT scene. Although he has an impressive collection, we have also seen the likes of other great rappers on the scene. With the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ja Rule aping in to NFT projects, Post Malone is unlikely to be the last.
