Pussy Riot, Russia’s political protest art collective, is launching a DAO to further promote inclusivity in the NFT space. The ultimate goal is to promote and protect women and LGBTQ+ artists.
Pussy Riot’s DAO
As the group’s co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova told Cointelegraph, the DAO will be working on reducing the gender inequality that still marks both the NFT and crypto industry.
As @bobbyhundreds puts it, “twice as many men invest in crypto than women. Meanwhile, women only make up 16% of the NFT space.” So there’s plenty of legroom to work on and make a change. Tolokonnikova said, “The NFT space is still so small. I feel that with a good enough effort, you can actually change it.”
Tolokonnikova is already rallying her fan base to support the cause. So the DAO would scale up her advocacy. The initiative is off to a good start because she will also hire a whole team who will be creating educational material for girls who want to enter the space.
This isn’t the first time that Pussy Riot is using its platform to raise awareness and funds for charity. In March 2021, the video of their music single “Panic Attack” sold for a total of 178 ETH as an NFT series. Most of the money was then donated to victims of domestic violence.
About the Controversial Group
The group gained global notoriety when five of its members staged a performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. As a result, the government arrested and charged Tolokonnikova for hooliganism.
Consistent with their reputation, they’ve released some controversial NFT projects. For example, their “Drink My Blood” Collection literally included the bottled blood of the artist.
