Thursday marked one of the highest transactions for NFTs to date. CryptoPunk sold one of their rare ape NFTs for a whopping $10.26 million.
Why did this particular CryptoPunk sell for so much?
This ape CryptoPunk was one of the rarest. In total, there are 24 apes in the CryptoPunk collection. To make the theme more interesting, they introduced non-human categories like zombies, apes, and aliens to the list. Obviously, these prove to be the most popular so far.
In fact, apes are the second rarest type in the collection. Only Nine aliens exist with the 88 zombies being the next most rare. The vast majority of CryptoPunks are humans, of which there are 9,879.
But what are the CryptoPunks?
The CryptoPunks are one of the earliest – if not the earliest -NFT projects. There are 10,000 collectible characters stored on the Ethereum blockchain . The characters are 24×24 pixels portraying pop art portraits of punky guys.
Matt Hall and John Watkinson designed a software that could spawn thousands of characters. Without knowing the possibilities that could create. Plus, every punk has their own profile page that shows their attributes as well as their ownership/for-sale status.
The series received high-profile attention, with celebrities like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gary Vee, and Serena Williams aping in.
The highest selling NFT from CryptoPunks is ‘Covid Alien’ which sold for $11.75 million characterised with a face mask. Covid Alien sold in about four minutes.
The team behind these NFTs pioneers the way for the artists of the future. In conclusion, with the sales piling up and their reputation going from strength to strength, CryptoPunks will soon be a household name if they aren’t already.
