Hip-hop musician Rick Ross’s Porsche 911 is going up for sale as an NFT, with a twist. Hand-painted by artist Rich B Caliente, it has a fun, mind-bending design. But it’s not just an image of the Porsche being auctioned, it’s the car itself. Bids start at $305,911 USD on June 4.
This hybrid NFT drop isn’t the first to merge a physical object with digital art, but it is certainly one of the most luxurious. The Porsche 911 is already an iconic car, worth a small fortune on its own. But with this merging of digital and physical, the owner of a car will have a digital record to go with it.
Layers of paint and meaning
The Porsche had to be partially disassembled for its paint job, but the results are impressive. Caliente is a renowned abstract artist who speicalizes in “artomotive” designs — designs on vehicles. The paint job took two weeks to complete before adding the drips and splatters. The interior is largely untouched, except for custom floor mats.
The car’s starting price, $305,911, is a combination of Miami’s area code (305) and the Porsche model number (911). It’s expected the final price will be significantly higher when the bidding is done.
Rick Ross raises money for charity
Part of the proceeds of the NFT sale will go to the Irie Foundation. The foundation empowers the lives of at-risk youth in South Florida. Ross is known for his charitable giving, and his extravaggant projects.
Hybrid NFT drops are becoming more and more common as the crypto world matures. This gives old-school investors a taste of digital art in a familiar package. The Rick Ross Porsche drop is just another step toward making NFTs accessible to everyone. Assuming they have half a million dollars lying around.
