Celebrated tennis player Serena Williams is the latest in the long line of celebrities joining the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Williams’ husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian gifted Williams this NFT.

Williams showed off her latest acquisition – a pink BAYC – on Twitter. Her husband Alexis Ohanian confirmed he had gifted Williams this NFT: “First I get you the SerenaPunk, now I get the pink ape you wanted… you realize I’m only gifting you NFTs from now on right?” Ohanian purchased the NFT on January 5th for 117 ETH ( around $330,667 at the time) and transferred it to the tennis star’s wallet.
Many Serena Williams fans are happy with BAYC’s new high-profile member. Other NFT project owners also commented on her tweet, coaxing her to join their community. Women Rise NFT project owner Maliha Abidi was one such project creator who invited Williams to join her project:
“Hi Serena, I am the creator of @WomenriseNFT and I would love to welcome you to our community! But if you also need any recommendations for other projects, I’d be happy to help. Welcome to the world of NFTs!”.
This is not the first time Serena Williams has made headlines due to her association with the NFT space. Yesterday, Sorare announced Williams as their official advisor. Sorare is a community-owned fantasy sports game leveraging NFTs. Williams will lead the board on issues such as women’s sports, as well as diversity and inclusion on Web3. Additionally, Williams will help Sorare build relationships with athletes around the world.
