The Mekong Club To Host NFT Fundraiser To Raise Awareness On Modern Slavery

    By Reethu RaviNovember 10, 2022Updated:November 11, 20222 Mins Read

The Mekong Club, a Hong Kong-based non-profit organisation, is launching an NFT fundraiser to raise global awareness about modern slavery. Created in partnership with NMKR, this is Hong Kong’s first nonprofit-ran NFT fundraiser. Organised as part of The Mekong Club’s 10-year anniversary, the fundraiser reflects the club’s vision of a slave-free world. In essence, the non-profit hopes for a world where businesses take a step towards achieving social sustainability.

    About The NFT Fundraiser

Initially, Matt Friedman, The Mekong Club’s CEO, hosted a session bringing together designers from across countries and diverse cultural backgrounds. Using NFTs, the volunteer designers were tasked with designing a world without slavery. Later, on November 29, The Mekong Club will auction the NFTs. Notably, the day marks #CryptoGivingTuesday, a global crypto fundraising campaign for non-profits.

Furthermore, The Mekong Club is also working on its annual Sweatshop Challenge. The event encourages corporates, schools, and the public to experience a “sweatshop situation”. Through the initiative, the non-profit is trying to raise awareness about modern slavery, human trafficking, and forced labour.

“Unfortunately, among all the nonprofits globally working on this issue and the United Nations combined, less than a quarter of one percent of the profits generated from criminal activity are being used to combat modern slavery,” Friedman said. “We hope that through this year’s fundraising activities, we can create a global awareness of the issue so we can collectively put an end to modern slavery.”

    What is the Mekong Club?

Founded in 2012, The Mekong Club works with the private sector to globally adopt sustainable practices against modern slavery. The non-profit closely works with small, medium, and multinational brands to share best practices and practical recommendations. What’s more, the club is the recipient of three international awards, the Stop Slavery Innovation Award, Asia Gold Award, and USAID’s Evidence2Action Award.

The NFT fundraiser is The Mekong Club’s latest initiative to fulfil its mission of raising global awareness about modern slavery. You can find out more about the initiative on the club’s website.
