The Sandbox is partnering with Skybound Entertainment to bring the Walking Dead Metaverse experience to The Sandbox. The popular zombie-themed comic book and television franchise will soon populate the metaverse with familiar characters and themes.
Walking Dead Metaverse Experience
Once live, The Sandbox will feature an interactive Walking Dead game experience. In general, users will attempt to survive a fictional zombie uprising in the game. The game will recreate popular comic book characters like Rick Gries and Michonne in the game’s signature block 3D voxel style. The gameplay would involve harvesting resources, fending off undead attackers and forging alliances in order to survive. Moreover, players can use The Walking Dead-themed assets within The Sandbox’s Game Maker toolset.
Dan Murray, co-CEO of Skybound Games & Merchandise, teased the fans a bit. He said, “Bringing The Walking Dead comic book franchise to The Sandbox metaverse will offer fans a groundbreaking opportunity to play, create, socialize, inhabit and interact within a novel multiplayer gaming virtual world.”
As with other brand partnerships, there will be a dedicated plot of land on The Sandbox’s shared world map devoted to “The Walking Dead.” Players have an opportunity to purchase surrounding LAND parcels. Thus, they can be the neighbor of The Walking Dead’s virtual property.
In addition to the metaverse experience, users will be able to create new content based on The Walking Dead. For example, they can create their own fan-made adventures and stories featuring characters, game items, equipment and even wearables based on the franchise. Afterward, they can showcase their collectible in a digital gallery or museum.
The Sandbox’s Metaverse Vision
The Sandbox is set to launch a public alpha test this summer to let players experience the shared 3D metaverse for the first time. So “The Walking Dead” with its global fanbase is meant to reach the mainstream masses.
The Sandbox co-founder and COO Sébastien Borget shared the ultimate goal of this partnership. He said, “Our vision is to make The Sandbox’s open metaverse feel like a virtual attraction park with many amazing unique social experiences, with “The Walking Dead.”
