Elon and his love/hate relationship with NFTs

Yesterday, as news of Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter was finally confirmed, the social media platform introduced a new feature – NFT Tiles. The new NFT feature allows linked NFTs to appear in larger pictures alongside details about the NFT artworks. It will also include information about the artist and the title of the NFT art. It has been an exciting week for NFTs on social media, with Reddit NFTs exploding into the OpenSea charts. So, what is next for Elon’s Twitter future?

    Twitter introduces NFT Tiles!

Elon Musk is now the official owner of Twitter after completing a $44 billion takeover. In recent years, Elon Musk has spoken about NFTs, both positively and negatively, so it is undoubtedly an interesting time for the Twitter NFT community. However, the same day the deal was announced, the social media giant Twitter also introduced NFT Tiles.

In a tweet, @Twitterdev said, “Now testing: NFT Tweet Tiles Some links to NFTs on @rarible, @MagicEden,@dapperlabs and @Jumptradenft will now show you a larger picture of the NFT alongside details like the title and creator. One more step in our journey to let developers impact the Tweet experience.”

Rarible and others join the Twitter test feature

It is unclear how long the Twitter NFT Tiles test will last. Also, so far, only four NFT marketplaces have been selected for testing the new feature. These are Rarible, Magic Eden, DapperLabs, and Jump.Trade. Notably, Rarible is one of the biggest NFT marketplaces in the world, with over $300 million in trading volume.

Of course, OpenSea users will also want to see their NFTs in the NFT Tiles feature. As the biggest NFT platform by a large margin ($32.75 billion in volume), Twitter will also want OpenSea onboard if the test goes well.

How do Twitter NFT Tiles work?

Twitter has previously introduced a similar tile system for expanding news articles. Basically, Twitter is launching an enhancement feature for NFTs.

The NFT Tiles will automatically expand and show users a full-size image of the NFT image they click on, including metadata. Moreover, it will also offer a link to its location on the participating NFT marketplace.

    Twitter continues NFT integration

The NFT community is huge on Twitter, and it is one of the best ways to find other NFT enthusiasts and information about projects and events (apart from NFTevening).

Since NFTs began to rise in popularity in 2021, Twitter has been looking at ways to integrate the technology. In June 2021, they even released a free NFT collection. Furthermore, In January, it added the NFT hexagon profile pic feature. The most recent Twitter NFT feature is the NFT Tiles.

Elon and his love/hate relationship with NFTs

Now, with a new owner, billionaire Elon Musk, many in the NFT community are wondering what will come next. In a recent interview, Elon said, “You can bet that digital assets will play a more prominent role on Twitter.”

However, Elon has also mocked NFTs from time to time. One notable example is when he changed his Twitter profile pic to a Bored Ape NFT in May. Following this, he tweeted, “I dunno … seems kinda fungible.” Upon Twitter’s NFT profile pic launch, Elon called NFTs “annoying.”

The New Twitter NFT Tiles are currently in testing mode, but it will be interesting to see how the community reacts to the feature and what Elon Musk has planned for NFTs on the platform.
