Unit London will be launching the first UK exhibition of physical NFT artworks tomorrow. The exhibition – Eternalising Art History – includes masterpieces by Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael and Modigliani. Between 16 February and 19 March, art and tech enthusiasts can view these digital artworks free of charge in Mayfair, London.
The physical counterparts are in museums in Italy. However, thanks to the latest Web3 technology, the digital versions of these masterpieces will be available to the public in London.
The six masterpieces included in this exhibition represent a different art movement. Each NFT is an exact replica of the physical artwork – priced between £100,000 and £500,000. 50% of the net sales of each artwork will go directly to museums to preserve their collections for future generations. Moreover, each work will be available as a digital limited edition of nine.
Eternalising art history via NFTs
Unit London has been leading the UK’s digital art revolution since its inception in 2013. Eternalising Art History will be the first in a series of planned exhibitions of digital artworks. As a result, these exhibitions will further bridge the gap between physical and virtual experiences.
Joe Kennedy, Director of Unit London, commented on the arts sector and the metaverse: “We are delighted to present Eternalising Art History as a first of its kind; truly breaking new ground. We are entering a brave new world and it’s exciting to find opportunities for blockchain technology to generate audiences, revenue and footfall for the museums that care for these masterpieces.”
This NFT exhibition in London comes at a time when most people are still unable to travel due to COVID-19. In addition, it coincides with the increasing popularity of NFTs in the fine arts sector; especially after the art industry recorded annual sales of $2.7 billion in 2021 due to NFTs.
