Penfold, the Australian winemaker has teamed up with BlockBar to create a vintage wine barrel NFT. BlockBar, a leading NFT marketplace in liqours, will host the barrel’s sale.
Only one customer selected from a lucky draw will get to buy the NFT for $130,000 (~30 ETH). The Penfold Magill Cellar 3 2021 vintage wine barrel, which is still maturing, will be ready to bottle up in October 2022 and sold in October 2023.

Once the barrel is distributed into 300 bottles, the NFT tied to the barrel will also be divided into 300 bottles NFTs.
This extremely rare wine has only 13 barrels and none of them are available on the market. A mix between old vine Barossa Shiraz and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s an elegant work of winemaker Peter Gago. Penfold described the tasting notes as “dark red fruits and sweet spices, with layers of briar, cardamom and cedar.”
The customer owning the barrel wouldn’t be able to redeem it before the maturing process finishes. Since it’s a collectors’ edition, the customer will be the sole custodian of the collection.

However, the person who owns the barrel NFT will be able to sell or transfer the barrel NFT or the bottled NFTs as they please.
To commemorate the ownership of the barrel, the buyer will get a personalized keepsake barrel head from Penfold. Also, the winemakers will invite them to a private wine tasting ceremony in Penfolds Magill Estate Winery in South Australia.
The market rare liquor NFT is growing by the day. Last month, Dave Powell released a single vineyard wine NFT. An Aberdeen-based start-up released their scottish whiskey collection in NFT version.
