The late George A. Romero’s 1960s zombie film classic Night of the Living Dead is being resurrected as an NFT Collection. Romero’s son, George C. Romero, is continuing his father’s legacy with a horrifying new comic book prologue to the film entitled The Rise.
With the help of Heavy Metal Entertainment, which publishes comic book series, Romero is raising terror off the page and into the Metaverse through an NFT drop. So on October 27, you’ll get to score NFTs inspired by the iconic monster on Crypto.com. A perfect Halloween treat for every zombie fan!
How Night of the Living Dead Inspired The Rise NFT Collection
The upcoming The Rise NFT drop will feature a collection of media in various formats based on the undead classic. For example, the documentary-style animated videos tell the story of the project’s formation. To add a more personal touch, Romero did the voiceover and narrated his decade-long struggle of finding “The Rise” a proper home. He also touched on his personal life and how it was like growing up with “godfather of the dead.” Then, he gave his personal take on how his father’s life, work, and legacy impacted the zombie genre.
The plotline chronicles the events that lead up to the iconic 1968 feature film. It presents readers with a Kennedy-era prequel tale explaining exactly what happened before the worst night on Earth. Artist Diego Yapur and colorist DC Alonso’s striking illustrations for The Rise amplify the sense of horror and dread in myriad ways. They chose to use a limited color palette for the red-tinted interior pages to crank up the terror.
Romero is also an accomplished producer and director in his own right. He brings along 30 years of experience in the industry. So he is the best person to resurrect his father’s work into the Metaverse.
In a statement, Romero expressed his excitement over expanding his father’s work into the NFT space. “NFTs are one of the most exciting new spaces for me. To launch ‘The Rise’ NFTs with Heavy Metal on Crypto.com is one of those next-gen moments for a brand that has endured for five decades. I love the excitement that bleeds from a Romero and Heavy Metal collaboration. I’m so excited to see the future hitting both of our legacy brands with such force.”
Here’s why you should not miss this NFT Drop…
Night of the Living Dead is considered a cult classic. It is frequently identified as the first modern zombie film and a touchstone in the development of the horror genre. Moreover, it has appeared on lists of the greatest films ever made by outlets like Empire, The New York Times and Total Film.
Aside from its filmography and commercial success, the film famously wound up in the public domain due to its distributor’s failure to include a copyright notice on the film’s assets. As a result, Romero’s portrayal of zombies became the world’s first “open-source creature” and allowed generations of creators to build on top of it.
