After auctioning off NFTs for record-breaking prices, traditional auction house Christie’s is gearing up for its first onchain auction in partnership with OpenSea. This marks the traditional auction house’s inaugural foray into curating a sale via the Ethereum blockchain.
Christie’s x OpenSea Collaboration
Davis, nft now and Ronnie Pirovino curated the Christie’s x OpenSea NFT auction. Collectibles and new 1/1 artworks will be up for grabs. Collectors can start browsing the listing beginning December 1 until December 3. Meanwhile, bidding will be open between December 4 – 7.
As expected from the auction house that hosted Beeple’s historic NFT Sale for $69.3 Million, the biggest names are participating in the event. As of press time, the featured artists’ list includes Alpha Centauri Kid, Andre Oshea, Baeige, Blake Kathryn, DotPigeon and FriendsWithYou. Mad Dog Jones, FVCKRENDER, Krista Kim, Tom Sachs and WhIsBe are part of the growing list.
Aside from being household names in the NFT space, the digital artists in the line-up have all proven themselves commercially. For example, Multidisciplinary artist Mad Dog Jones pulled $4 Million in Sales on a single drop via Nifty Gateway last February. He also launched art collabs with mainstream artists like Maroon 5, Run the jewels, Deadmau5 and Jabbawockeez.
In addition, some of the works will also be on exhibit at Art Basel Miami at The Gateway, a gallery collaboration between nft now and Christie’s that aims to usher in a new era of NFT innovation. The gallery will be held December 2-3 at an as-yet-undisclosed Miami bank. The organizers transformed the venue into a 23,000 square-foot immersive audiovisual gallery that takes attendees on a sensory journey. So just visit The Gateway’s website if you want an invite!
Inside Scoop from the Partners
In a statement, Noah Davis, Christie’s specialist and head of digital, gave a walkthrough of how this partnership will progress. She said, “With this collaboration, we are bringing the Christie’s brand boldly onto the blockchain. Our collaboration with OpenSea allows us to combine our expert curation and prestigious provenance with the convenience of decentralization.”
Personally, she hopes this will be the beginning of a new era for NFT sales at Christie’s. Here at NFTEvening, we hope so too!
Alexander Bercow, art partnerships lead at OpenSea, added, “Christie’s is a globally-renowned art and luxury business that has shaped this industry for centuries. The opportunity to bring their legacy and curatorial expertise to OpenSea’s platform was obviously extremely compelling to us. We’re excited to share these highly coveted, inspiring artworks and collectibles with enthusiasts around the world.”
Exciting times indeed for the NFT space!
Keeping up with the Competition
Christie’s is not the only traditional auction house fully embracing blockchain and NFTs. Last month, Sotheby’s became the first auction house to launch a dedicated marketplace for NFTs. Sotheby’s Metaverse will exclusively host all of Sotheby’s NFT sales.
Yesterday, we also reported that Sotheby’s is holding its biggest charity NFT auction ever in partnership with Sostento. The non-profit organization will auction off its latest NFT collection to raise funds and support frontline public health workers.
