One of Motorsport’s most legendary teams is joining the NFT World. McLaren Racing announced that it is partnering with green blockchain, Tezos, to build an NFT Platform with fan experience at its core. The partnership covers McLaren’s Formula 1, IndyCar and Esports team.
Meet the team
McLaren Racing is best-known as a Formula 1 Constructor. The British motor racing team is the second oldest active team and second most successful team after Ferrari. The team has won 182 races, 12 Driver’s Championships and 8 Constructors’ Championships in its trademark papaya orange livery. Starting in 2020, McLaren began running the Arrow McLaren SP which competes in the IndyCar Series.
McLaren is also the home of the most iconic drivers like F1 Legend Ayrton Senna. The great Brazilian driver won three titles for McLaren in 1988, 1990 and 1991. In doing so, Senna broke several world records with McLaren many of which stand to this day. Nicknamed ‘The Professor’ for his calculated approach and smooth driving style, Alain Prost won three world drivers’ titles for McLaren.
The team aims to parlay its illustrious racing heritage and renowned driver line-ups across its multiple teams to offer an NFT-based fan experience. As one of the teams featured in the Netflix Series Drive to Survive, McLaren has a solid global presence.
Lindsey Eckhouse, Director, Licensing, e-commerce and esports of McLaren Racing, explained why the team is pursuing a fan-centric NFT Platform. She said, “Tezos and McLaren Racing uniting to create a unique fan-focused NFT platform is an innovative step in an exciting and rapidly developing industry. At McLaren, we are known for putting fans at the heart of everything we do, and this is another partnership which allows us to enter a space where fans can own key pieces of our team. We are looking forward to launching the platform with Tezos to create bespoke NFTs with our Formula 1, INDYCAR and esports teams.”
Choosing Tezos
McLaren is teaming up with Tezos in a multi-year technical partnership to build the NFT Platform. The two companies find common ground in the belief that sustainability through innovation is critical.
Tezos is known as a green and energy-efficient blockchain. Tezos’ pioneering Proof of Stake mechanism is a significantly more energy-efficient approach to securing its network. In effect, it uses two million times less energy than PoW blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum,
Hubertus Thonhauser, Chair, Tezos Foundation, said, “ The concept of blockchain is evolving, becoming faster, more secure, and more efficient. This requires a blockchain that can keep up with this rapid pace of innovation. As brands everywhere look to engage with their fans in new ways, Tezos, the original and fastest evolving blockchain, remains at the forefront of innovation, providing real-world solutions in a thriving and fast-growing ecosystem.”
NFT Grid Action
McLaren is not the first F1 team to drive towards NFTs. Aston Martin released an NFT drop back in March while Red Bull Racing is also working with Tezos. There is a solid market for F1 NFTs because it is the most-watched motor racing sport globally with 525 million viewers.
The racing team’s fan-centric NFT platform proves that NFTs are revolutionizing the fan experience. GSW is offering warriors-for-a-day activities along with its NFTs. Mayweather is holding a private boxing lesson for the winner of his NFT auction.
McLaren is currently leading the midfield with two podiums this 2021 Season. Soon, we’ll see the logo of Tezos represented across the McLaren Formula 1 and Arrow McLaren SP teams. This includes the race suits of McLaren F1 drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Riccardo. Tezos will also be presenting partner of the McLaren Shadow esports team.
