Moxie Marlinspike, the founder of Signal, the secure messaging service, has released an NFT. However, all is not as it seems. The NFT titled ‘At my whim’ will change appearance depending on who views it and what platform. Aimed at highlighting the fragility of NFT metadata, it is currently for sale on Opensea and Rarible, with both sites displaying different images.
According to Moxie, this NFT joke will appear as a ‘giant poop emoji’ in the successful owner’s wallet.

This NFT joke highlights the potential downside of token ownership. Essentially, most NFTs are vulnerable to manipulation, and Moxie wants to make people ask where exactly your NFT data is stored.
In a Twitter thread dated October 13th, Moxie Marlinspike explained his reasoning behind this troll project. He wants people to understand that when you purchase an NFT, you need to know what you are buying. Thus, his little NFT joke serves as a reminder to proceed with caution. Although the digital data of the token lives on the blockchain, the digital image usually isn’t. Generally, an image hosting site stores the files off-chain. Unfortunately, that means ‘whoever controls the URL host can change the NFT image at any time, according to Moxie.
Known for his eccentricity, It is no surprise that Moxie Marlinspike is trolling the NFT world with this poop emoji joke. Although it’s funny, he’s raising awareness of a serious issue in the industry.
Shocked by the interest in his NFT, Moxie tweeted yesterday, “Would any of the people who’ve been bidding on my NFT be willing to host an AMA? I have so many questions”.
