Yesterday, the “Memorial Art of Gymnastics Legend – KOHEI UCHIMURA × DAI TAMURA” NFT was sold at 12.5 ETH, around 42k USD at the time of writing. This NFT commemorates the retirement of Kohei Uchimura. He has achieved countless great performances in the gymnastics world for many consecutive years. Illustration artist Dai Tamura depicts the moment where the champion sticks his landing, which is his focus in all his routines.
The Kohei Uchimura Project
First of all, let me just say how perfect this illustration looks. Dai Tamura, an authorized illustrator in the NBA, certainly ‘nailed the landing’ on this one. This 1-of-1 NFT shows a series of movements from the 2014 World Gymnastics Championships, where King Kohei won his 5th consecutive title. And the most iconic move, one that he perfected down to the millimeter, the landing.
The above art piece is just the first of the Kohei Uchimura Project, dubbed Project 001. Project 002 went on sale yesterday, and is also very unique. It consists of honorary membership cards with LIVE Sign. Each NFT video displays his performance, message, and autograph within a digital picture frame. Likewise, we expect Project 003 to bring the same exclusivity.
A portion of the revenue will go to ”Never Stop Playing Sports”. This is a general incorporated association where top athletes go beyond their athletic pursuits, to support the development of student-athletes. Financial difficulties, especially amidst the pandemic, have seen more student-athletes give up sports for a more ‘practical’ career. This association helps them continue to pursue their gifts while making ends meet.
Japan’s Gymnastics King
Kohei Uchimura is a three-time Olympic gymnastics gold medalist from Japan. The 33-year old recently announced his retirement from the sport, bowing out gracefully. Until today, Many in the gymnastics world consider him the king of gymnastics. From 2009 to 2016, no other competitor had a chance to take his international title from him. Not surprisingly, he has won the hearts of many, especially the home crowd.
