Former Hollywood visual effects professional pplpleasr has just announced her new projects “Shibuya” and “White Rabbit”. These two projects promise to revolutionise the animation NFT sector.
How did these projects come about?
According to pplpleasr, the ideas for these two unique projects came about when she thought about the unexplored use of NFT and blockchain technologies.
“This is where the idea of Shibuya came about,” said pplpleasr. “A web 3 experiment where long-form content is free to watch, but monetized on blockchain to allow viewer participation [in] the creative process and also shared ownership.”
The artist was inspired by her love of art and great storytelling. After working in Hollywood for a while, she quickly realized that funding in the city of dreams is extremely political and a career in visual effects is very unstable.
After being unemployed in 2020, she started making her own animations for DeFi protocols. NFT’s creator-first economic model led to her animations going viral, which in turn led to PleasrDAO. After crowdfunding an Ethereum documentary via a series of NFTs, pplpleasr started creating Shibuya.
About pplpleasr’s Shibuya and White Rabbit
According to the artist, Shibuya is a web3 video platform that allows users to engage, fund, vote on the outcome and become owners of long-form content. Shibuya, named after the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing, is a place where cultures and ideas meet. Furthermore, it comprises many content and screens that are open to everyone.
White Rabbit is the first series to launch on Shibuya. Inspired by anime, Black Mirror, Love Death + Robots, and web3, the series is the result of a collaboration with artist and director Maciej Kuciara. Pplpleasr revealed that the series is in the form of free-to-watch, stake to pick your own path webisodes.
Gamifying the mechanics of voting
Simply put, the pilot will feature a main character that comes across two doors. Behind each door is a different ending. To watch and vote, users will need to mint a Producer Pass (ERC1155 NFT) and stake it in their chosen door.
Users who purchase this pass not only gain access to the ending but also fund the production of the film. Furthermore, they participate in deciding the fate of the main character.
By staking their Producer Pass, users earn $WRAB. This is an ERC20 token, which represents part ownership of White Rabbit. There will be a new pass for each chapter. Therefore, users will have a keepsake from each episode in their wallets.
What’s more – users who voted on the winning side will receive bonus $WRAB tokens. People can also earn extra tokens by voting early. Additionally, the team is collaborating with DegenScore to customize viewing experiences based on wallet history/on-chain activity.
Animated films are expensive to make. Through web 3 technology and mechanics, artists can turn passive viewers into active fans. This is because they not only watch but also support artistic work through funding. In addition, NFTs are a perfect opportunity to bypass the film industry’s gatekeepers and allow artists to unleash their full potential.
