Japanese game publisher Sega is looking to integrate NFTs and cloud support into its new ‘Super Game’ project. The suggestion was made during an interview on the company’s Japanese recruitment website.
According to Sega producer Masayoshi Kikuchi, such a move will be inevitable. In his own words: “It is a natural extension for the future of gaming that it will expand to involve new areas such as cloud gaming and NFTs.”
Sega ‘Super Game’ project: What you need to know
During Sega’s 2021 financial year presentation, the firm outlined its plans to create a ‘Super Game’ project. The project is a 5-year initiative that will host a wide range of AAA cross-platform titles. According to Sega’s Executive Vice President Shuji Utsumi, several titles are currently underway for the ‘Super Game’ project. In fact, the firm is looking to inject a whopping $800 million investment into the project.
Backlashes from traditional gamers
Not surprisingly, the news drew backlashes from anti-crypto gamers. Twitter user @DynamoSuperX responded in a tweet: “THE BETRAYAL. WHY SEGA?”. Some Sega fans also questioned the need for NFT integration in the Super Game, as games are already playable cross-consoles.
Seeing gaming NFTs as corporate greed, the news didn’t sit well with longtime Sega fans. In fact, back in February, Sega had to hold off on its plans for P2E NFT games due to fan backlash.
Final thoughts
Nevertheless, Sega registered a trademark for the term “Sega NFT” in January this year. Given the pace of development, it is just a matter of time before the company’s projects like the Super Game incorporate NFTs as well. However, Sega is not alone in its venture into Web 3. Rumor has it that Activision Blizzard may incorporate NFTs into Call of Duty games too.
