Japanese video game company, Konami has announced that it will be releasing NFTs of its Castlevania series. It is selling the NFTs to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Castlevania. 14 NFTs inspired by the game will go on auction next week.
Konami Becomes Latest Video Game Outfit To Try NFTs
Without a doubt, Castlevania is one of Konami’s most popular video game series. The first version of the game came out in 1986 in Japan, and 1987 in North America.
The auction for the Castlevania NFTs will start at 5 pm EST on January 12th. Then it will run until 9 pm EST on the 14th. The NFTs feature scenes and background music from Castlevania games, as well as newly drawn pixel art.
There are sneak peeks of the NFTs both on a website for the collection, and on OpenSea.
Castlevania NFT News Sparks Fan Outrage
Equally important here, is the way that Castlevania fans reacted to the NFT news. In short, they were furious.
To be sure, the fan reaction against the Castlevania NFTs isn’t surprising. In fact, there have been many cases of gaming fans raging against NFTs.
For example, there’s Ubisoft. The big game maker recently launched its own NFT platform called Quartz. However, when it put out the trailer for the platform, fans reacted so strongly that Ubisoft ended up taking the trailer down. SEGA also had a similar reaction from their fans as Konami has had to the Castlevania NFTs.
By the same token, while it isn’t a gaming company, the reaction to Discord’s NFT experiment also comes to mind. To explain, the chat app first grew popular in gaming communities.
At this point though, Discord is the NFT community’s go-to chat app. And when the CEO of Discord hinted that they were looking at some NFT and crypto integrations, those older Discord users were outraged.
At any rate, the auction for the Castlevania NFTs looks like it will go on regardless. All things considered, it seems like gaming fans are going to have to make peace with NFTs sooner or later.
After all, games are one of the most popular use cases for NFTs. So the link between the two is only going to grow.
