    By Emily NealeMarch 30, 2023Updated:April 4, 20232 Mins Read

Pussy Riot frontwoman, Nadya Tolokonnikova, is on the Russian Interior Ministry’s wanted list for an NFT artwork depicting the Virgin Mary. The Russian government has used the artwork as evidence for criminal charges. Specifically, the group is charged with “hurting the religious emotions” of the people of Russia. Significantly, Tolokonnikova and Pussy Riot regularly use their platform and NFT art to combat political tyranny and advocate for women’s rights.

Firstly, let’s take a look at Pussy Riot. In essence, Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist protest and performance art group. The group has used various forms of artistic expression, including music, poetry, and street theater, to challenge the Russian government’s policies and social norms. Pussy Riot began in 2011, and in recent years, has turned to the use of NFTs. The group released its first NFT in 2021, a series of digital artworks depicting Russian political prisoners.

Nadya Tolokonnikova is a Russian conceptual artist, political activist, and musician. Tolokonnikova has been arrested multiple times for her activism. Further, she is a vocal advocate for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of expression.

Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova Wanted for Controversial NFT Depicting Virgin Mary

Pussy Riot has once again found itself in controversy. This is due to the Russian Interior Ministry adding frontwoman, Nadya Tolokonnikova, to its wanted list for creating an NFT. Pussy Riot’s NFT, entitled “Virgin Mary, Please Become a Feminist,” features the Christian icon framed by “anatomical characteristics of the female external genitalia.” The Russian government has used Pussy Riot’s NFT as evidence for criminal charges against the group for “hurting the religious emotions” of the people of Russia. However, despite this legal challenge, the group continues to use NFTs as a means of artistic expression and social activism.

Pussy Riot’s Tolokonnikova, who is an experienced NFT artist and activist, co-founded UnicornDAO in 2022. Significantly, the organization has helped raise over $4 million to help underrepresented groups and marginalized artists. She also played a crucial role in UkraineDAO to support the resistance and relief operations.
