EDM legend and Grammy-nominated DJ Steve Aoki is doubling down on NFTs. Together with popular comic book artist and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, he is launching a new NFT Marketplace. Oddkey, which runs on the Solana Blockchain, will be available to users starting November 18.
According to the partners, the edge of Oddkey is that it’s a creator-focused NFT Marketplace that puts “artists in control of their digital work and allows fans to resell NFTs for little cost.”
Oddkey: Aoki and McFarlane’s NFT Marketplace
One of the first drops on the platform will be McFarlane’s notorious “Spawn #1” from 1992. That year the Canadian comic book creator made history by selling close to 500,000 copies of the first issue worldwide. In fact, “Spawn #1” is one of the largest monthly title releases from Image Comics in 25 years.
“I wanted to create a world where creators create freely,” McFarlane commented about Odd Key’s creation. “[A place] where creators could control their creative and financial freedom the way that I was able to,” the acclaimed comic book artist added.
Aoki will also be dropping his own NFTs on the Marketplace featuring “his visual and music skills.” However, they assured potential users that they would not receive preferential treatment. They will receive and follow the same terms as the other content creators in order to promote fairness.
Following the initial launch, different sections of the Marketplace will also go live. For example, users can already use the featured artist section and a section for emerging artists called “Artist Alley.” Moreover, the platform will be leveraging the Solana blockchain network and Metaplex’s decentralized protocol marketplace. NFTs minted via the Metaplex protocol will be stored on Arweave, a network that the creators call a “permanent hard drive built on two novel technologies.”
Launch Campaign
To celebrate the launch, OddKey is giving out 6,666 free NFTs of an image titled SPAWNOKI. It is an amalgam of Aoki’s name and Spawn, a famous anti-hero comic book character created by McFarlane. Those who will sign-up in the Marketplace will receive this NFT.
“This will be the first time in 30 years that Todd McFarlane has authorized or authenticated any original art for sale, digital or otherwise.” In addition, it is also the first time Spawn original art will be made available to the public.
More about the Partners
Steve Aoki has been very active in the NFT world as a collector and a creator. For example, he sold his first NFT collection with Antoni Tudisco for $4.25 million on Nifty Gateway.
In a statement, Aoki shared why partnering with McFarlane makes sense. “I think that Todd and I both see a bit of ourselves in one another. We are both outsiders who’ve somehow made it in a world of insiders. Recognizing that NFTs could empower young creators to carve their own paths to discovery and financial freedom, we wanted to provide a platform to help them reach their audience.”
